Graceful

Son Cubano is a dance full of history, musicality and sophisticated movements. This style is not about big, explosive steps, but subtle cadence, balance and connection with your dance partner. You will learn to dance to the clave, the rhythmic heart of Cuban music and develops a style that is both technically strong and graceful.

At Salsa District, we offer Son Cubano for dancers seeking depth beyond regular salsa. You'll work on posture, smooth transitions, partner work and musicality so that every step tells you something. This dance style is the perfect choice if you want to learn how small movements make a big difference and how to give your dance a sophisticated, authentic look.

Son Cubano dance class with Jose Luis Palayo Herrera at Salsa District traditional elegance and musicality

From Cuba to the world

Son Cubano originated in the early 20th century in the "east" of Cuba and is considered the forerunner of modern Cuban salsa (Casino). The music is characterised by instruments such as the tres, maracas, bongó and double bass, and is danced on the two (contratiempo), providing a natural swing.

José Luis Pelayo Herrera

Born and educated in Havana, Cuba, José trained at the prestigious Narciso Medina Dance Academy. With a background in Son, Rumba, Chachachá, Mambo and Afro-Cuban folklore, he has performed with renowned companies such as Ocha, Ebano and Pinos Nuevos, and taught at dance academies in Cuba. He is a true Maestro.

Since 2006, José has lived in the Netherlands, where he shares his knowledge and passion with dancers of all levels. In his lessons, you will not only learn the technique and style of Son Cubano, but also how this dance forms the basis for many other Cuban styles such as salsa, timba, rueda and rumba. His smooth and elegant way of moving makes him the perfect teacher for anyone who wants to take their dancing to the next level.

Frequently asked questions

No! You can also register alone. You do not need a partner. In our classes, we provide a good mix of leaders and followers, using rotation and extra helpers to ensure the best possible balance.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable! Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, the higher the level, the more you will sweat! Keep in mind that personal hygiene is also essential, so come to class with clean and fresh clothes. For Salsa and Bachata, trainers with smooth bottoms are best, so preferably no studs! It is also handy if you bring a bottle of water, we don't want you to get dehydrated, ow and bring a snack for after class, this is recommended.

We recommend stable dance shoes with smooth soles. This will allow you to turn smoothly and glide smoothly, which perfectly suits the sophisticated nature of Son Cubano.

Try to arrive 10 to 5 minutes before class starts. This will give you time to change your shoes, warm up and sign in.

If you are a few minutes late, you can still join. But please be respectful to the group and be mindful of disturbing the class, you might not be able to join until the first part of the class is over. This is because we do not have eyes on the door during our classes and for safety reasons we close the door to unwanted guests.

Yes, Jose is here for you every Son lesson!
