Expression
Cuban Rumba is pure Cuban folklore. An expressive dance full of energy, play and connection to the music. In our classes, you will learn the different styles of Rumba, including Guaguancó, Yambú and Columbia, each with its own character and tempo. Rumba isn’t just about technique, but above all about interaction and interpretation. You learn to play with rhythm, respond to your partner and the music, and let your body move freely. It is a style that is both challenging and incredibly fun, helping you bring more expression and musicality to all your dancing.
A dance with deep roots
Cuban Rumba originated in the 19th century in Cuba's port cities and neighbourhoods. It grew out of African rhythms and Spanish influences, performed on percussion such as congas, claves and cajón. Each style has its own story:
Yambú - the oldest and calmest, with graceful movements.
Guaguancó - playful and seductive, with the famous vacunao (a teasing move).
Columbia - fast and virtuoso, usually danced solo by men, but now also by women!
Falling in love with Cuban dance
Charissa's dance journey began at the age of 17 when she discovered salsa in the heart of Amsterdam at community centre "Guanipa Fun Factory" in Noord. Immediately fascinated by the rhythms, she began learning LA style salsa (On1) and immersed herself in the vibrant local dance scene, where she often danced the night away at the now-closed Cantinero club in de Pijp. Her dedication to perfecting her craft led her to take classes at various levels at different dance schools in the city. After four years of mastering the LA style, Charissa switched to the sophisticated New York style salsa (On2), rekindling her passion and expanding her dance repertoire. As her skills grew, she sought more challenges by attending international salsa festivals and performing with show teams.
In 2014, Charissa's love for dance took a new turn when she attended a Cuban Dance Congress in the Netherlands. Here, she discovered the rich traditions of Casino, Rumba and other Cuban folk dances, giving birth to a new passion. To deepen her knowledge, she travelled to Breda to study with renowned instructor Beamiris Rodriques. She joined her student team and honed her skills in the Cuban Rumba. Today, Charissa is a proud member of the International Cuban Dance Company (ICDC), where she continues to explore and celebrate the richness of Cuban dance. She now teaches Afro-Cuban dance classes in Amsterdam, sharing her expertise and enthusiasm with students eager to connect with this vibrant culture.
