Get to know Steffi and the Heels class!
Who am I?
Hi, I’m Steffi! Born in the Netherlands and raised under the sunny skies of Spain, my journey into the world of dance began as a teenager. This adventure started with commercial dance lessons and soon expanded to various styles like hip-hop, heels, afro fusion, and modern during my university years. My love for dance grew with each step, eventually leading me to salsa under the guidance of Wesley and Maaike, a journey I cherish deeply.
My experience
My commitment to dance is rooted in learning from diverse styles and teachers. This led me to embrace workshops and multiple dance classes per week in Valencia, London, and Amsterdam. Having trained for over 15 years in different styles, I love sharing my experience and passion for dancing with other people. The past year I have been teaching weekly afro fusion classes, heels classes and workshops, salsa classes with Wesley and I was a guest teacher at the Confidance retreat in Portugal earlier last year.
What Makes Heels Special to Me?
In our day-to-day lives we might not always get the chance to feel confident and dive into our feminine energy. In heels dancing there are a lot of smooth and graceful moves, sharp lines and depending on the music, there is often a sensual and feminine energy that can make us feel empowered. This class is all about letting go of what happens outside of class and taking the time to fully embrace this energy, daring to try new moves and letting go of doubts and insecurities while growing in confidence when learning new tips and technique in class.
Is it Salsa on Heels or something different?
Although you can surely incorporate what you learn here in salsa dancing, this is a completely different genre. So forget about the 1, 2, 3, … 5, 6, 7 counting and stepping, here we will be dancing to R&B songs and other genres,, sometimes slow and sensual and other times more upbeat and fierce.
Heels for all Ladies
Not sure about or feeling a little intimidated by the ‘heels’ part of this class? No worries, you don’t need to start off with the highest stilettos. You can come in small heels, block heels, trainers or socks, whatever you feel most confident in. If you do show up in heels, make sure they support your ankles well.
This class is open level but suitable for beginners, everyone is welcome here! I structure the lessons in manageable segments, offering variations to suit different skill level.
In this class, we will work on:
✨ Walking confidently and dancing in heels
✨ Posture, balance, and creating beautiful lines
✨ Floorwork practice to step out of our comfort zone
✨ Learning routines and working on choreography retention
The Benefits of Heels class
Heels class is not only about expanding dance skills. It’s about building self-confidence, improving body coordination, and feeling good in our own skin. It’s an excellent outlet for releasing day-to-day stress and immersing oneself in the music and movement.
My Favorite Heels Tracks
Some of the songs I couldn’t get out of my head and absolutely had to make a choreo to are:
- ‘Smooth Operator’ by Sade
- ‘Hrs & Hrs’ by Muni Long
- ‘Take It There’ by Tone Stith and Ty Dolla $ign
Advice for upcoming Heels dancers
To new dancers, I say: embrace the new and don’t worry about perfection. Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Remember, it’s not about nailing the choreography right away; it’s about consistent practice, embracing your unique style, and enjoying the journey. Focus on feeling the music and the steps will follow (and always point your toes!).
