Rodolfo Argudín Justiz “Peruchín”;

A little of history

Peruchin started his studies at 8, his first teachers were his mother, Xiomara Justiz and his grandfather, Pedro Justiz PERUCHIN, the legendary great Cuban piano player of the 40’s, who discovered the talent and virtuosity of the young Rodolfo from the beginning.

From a young age Peruchin wins his first awards. He studied with the famous Cuban concert performer and great conductor Frank Fernández, and wins Cuban awards and the important Epinal from France, for best interpretation of Schumann’s Octava Noveletta.

Peruchin was awarded at UNEAC, considered the most relevant piano contestof Cuba.

In 1988 he graduates at Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) , where he acquires the highest classification as concert performer. At 23, he becomes part of the famous Cuban orchestra NG LA BANDA, considered by the press of various countries as a musical phenomenon for the rhythm and originality of its interpretation of the afro-Cuban music and for embracing in its set list genders that range from jazz to salsa, making presentations at important venues around the world. In this scenario Peruchin reaches international relevance as concert performer and conductor, and teaches in various European countries, in Japan and in the US.

Rodolfo is considered the creator of a new piano playing style called “El piano en la Timba” . In 1990, the famous American composer Kevin Moore highlights Peruchín in his website as a musical phenomenon, not only for his playingstyle, but also for being an innovator. His style influences thousands of musicians all over the world.

In 1994, at Montreaux Jazz Festival, Peruchin takes part in the newly created Yamaha Montreaux Jazz Festival international Award, of which 161 piano players from various countries took part and Peruchin gets the first prize, which leads him to play at the internationally prestigious Miles Davis Hall.

In 1998 Peruchin is invited by the Instituto Distrital de Bogotá, Colômbia, to be Musical Consultant, and takes part in various projects as juror of international festivals such as “Salsa al Parque” and “Festival de Jazz Bogotá”, among others. He becomes full professor of piano at Bogotá’s Universidade Javeriana, and arranger and concert performer of Colombian orchestras such as Guayacán and Maria Canela. In the year 2000 Peruchin joins the famous Orquesta Cubanismo, known for keeping Cuban traditional music roots, and shares stages with great international names in festivals in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia with wide acceptance in the international market.

At the end of 2007, Peruchin records an album as homage to his grandfather, Pedro Justiz Peruchin, with great stars of the Cuban music, such as Tata Güines and Changuito. In addition to taking part in projects such as Estrellas do Buena Vista Social Club and Guests, he develops his own project with a quartet, with which he recorded his solo work which will be released in Germany and Belgium in October 2010 and in Brazil in early 2011. In 2016 he wrote his book “Del Son a la Timba” with the production company ICyArt, Mexico. In this book Rodolfo Argudin “Peruchin” shares his musical legacy through a method, a guide for piano and Cuban music scholars. He participated in the Barranquijazz International Festival in 2017 and 2019, sharing the stage with great figures such as Roberto Roena, Tony Vega, Aimé Nuviola and José Alberto “El Canario”.

In 2018 he directed the musical production of the Spanish show Hotel Habana,which was widely accepted internationally. He gave master classes in February and October 2019 at the renowned CODARTS University, Rotterdam. He shared the stage with the majestic North American musicians of the Ghosts- Note group in November 2019. He leads his project “PERUCHIN, JAZZ AND TRADITION” made up of excellent musicians with great national and international careers, in addition to making musical productions for various groups. Very important to highlight in his pianistic and pedagogical career is his participation as a jury member at the UNISA 2020 International Piano Competition held in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa from January 21 to February 3 recently, sharing with great pianists of recognized international career such as Reggie Thomas, USA; Hans Vroomas, Holland, pianist of the Metropole Orchestra; Xavier Davis, USA, winner of several Grammy awards and Jangeun Bae, the most recognized South Korean pianist today. He currently resides in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia, where he is a professor at the Universidad del Atlántico and the Universidad Reformada, in addition to directing the musical group Cubakilla, mixing Colombian rhythms and Cuban music. Invited to participate in the Barranquijazz International Festival in 2017, 2019 and 2020 Invited to the International Piano Festival in Bucaramanga in September 2024 and to the International Chamber Festival in March 2024 in the city of Manizales, Colombia!
